CIP RC/PT Girder Help

Stirrup Definitions Dialog Box

The Stirrup Definitions dialog box allows you to define the vertical reinforcement (i.e., stirrups). To open this dialog box, click the Stirrups button on the Model tab. CIP RC/PT Girder will use stirrups to determine section shear capacities.

Adding Stirrup Rows

Each girder may contain any number of stirrups. In addition, the full section may have any number of stirrups. The effect of the stirrups defined for the full section will be distributed among the individual girders. Conversely, the effect of the stirrups defined for an individual girder will be distributed to the full section. These distributed stirrups are automatically generated by CIP RC/PT Girder and cannot be edited directly by the user.

Perform the following steps to add a stirrup row:
  1. Select the girder section you want to modify from the drop-down list in the Girder field.
  2. In the grid, select the stirrup you want to add to by clicking anywhere in its row. A blue arrow displays on the left side of the grid to mark the selection.
  3. Click the Add Stirrup button. This adds a new stirrup row after the selected one.
  4. Enter the stirrup row values in the grid. A definition for each parameter is available below.

Deleting Stirrup Rows

Perform the following steps to delete a stirrup row:
  1. Select the girder section you want to modify from the drop-down list in the Girder field.
  2. In the grid, select the stirrup row you want to delete. A blue arrow displays on the left side of the grid to mark the selection.
  3. Click the Delete Stirrup button to remove the selected row.

Copying To All Stirrup Rows

In many cases, several similar stirrups exist in all girders. The Copy to All Girders command is used to create a duplicate of the selected stirrups in every girder to simplify the definition of similar stirrups.

Perform the following steps to copy a row of stirrups:
  1. Select the girder section you want to modify from the drop-down list located in the Girder field.
  2. In the grid, select the stirrup row you want to copy. A blue arrow displays on the left side of the grid to mark the selection.
  3. Click the Copy to All Stirrups button to copy the selected row.

Grid Definitions

SettingDescription
Girder The girder to which the stirrup definition applies.
Number of Bars Enter the number of stirrup legs needed.
Stirrup Size Select the bar size from the drop-down list. The bar size name refers to a rebar material definition loaded from the Rebar Library. Rebar material definitions include specification of: unit type, yield stress (fy), ultimate stress (fu), modulus of elasticity, deformed diameter, and area. The Rebar Library can be found under the Libraries menu. Rebar material definitions must be added and deleted from the Rebar Library. An additional rebar size, "unknown," is provided. Use the "unknown" size to enter the rebar area directly.
Stirrup Area Displays the total area of stirrup legs for this row if a stirrup size is used. Enter the total area of stirrup legs for this row for an "unknown" size.
Stirrup Spacing Enter the spacing of the stirrups.
Reference Type Select the reference type from the drop-down list.
SettingDescription
Span Stirrup starting and ending locations are to be specified with respect to spans. Spans are defined as the distance between supports (piers or abutments) except that the first span is defined as starting at the BB and the last span ends at the EB.
Support Stirrup starting and ending locations are to be specified with respect to supports (i.e. abutments or piers).
Bridge Stirrup starting and ending locations are to be specified with respect to the beginning of the bridge or girder.
Continuous Stirrups are continuous from the beginning to the end of the bridge or girder.
Ref Num Reference number when specifying locations by Span or Support. This field will be disabled for the Bridge and Continuous location methods.
Ref Unit Click to define the starting and ending Stirrup locations as either a percentage or as a distance in the current units.
Ref Start Distance Enter the Stirrup starting location.
Ref End Distance Enter the Stirrup ending location.
